چکیده

We study logic programs under Gelfond’s translation in the context of modal logic S5. We show that for arbitrary logic programs (propositional theories where logic negation is associated with default negation) ground nonmonotonic modal logics between T and S5 are equivalent. Furthermore, we also show that these logics are equivalent to a nonmonotonic logic that we construct using the well known FOUR bilattice. We will call this semantic GNM-S5 as a reminder of its origin in the logic S5. Finally we show that, for normal programs, our approach is closely related to the Well-Founded-by-Cases Semantics introduced by Schlipf and the WFS+ proposed by Dix. We prove that GNM-S5 has the properties of classicality and extended cut. While WFS+ also supports classicality it fails to satisfy the extended cut principle, an important property available in other semantics such as stable models. Hence, we claim that GNM-S5 is a good candidate for defining a nonmonotonic semantics closer to the direction of classical logic.

Minimal Knowledge States in Nonmonotonic Modal Logics

Recent studies on the computational properties of the logic of minimal knowledge states due to Halpern and Moses (also known as ground logic S5 G) have shown that reasoning in this logic is strictly harder than in all the most studied propositional non-monotonic formalisms, in particular with respect to nonmonotonic modal logics due to McDermott and Doyle. In this paper we show that the logic o...

More on modal aspects of default logic

Investigations of default logic have been so far mostly concerned with the notion of an extension of a default theory. It turns out, however, that default logic is much richer. Namely, there are other natural classes of objects that might be associated with default reasoning. We study two such classes of objects with emphasis on their relations with modal nonmonotonic formalisms. First, we intr...

A Preference Semantics for Ground Nonmonotonic Modal Logics

In this paper we provide a semantic characterization of ground logics, a family of nonmonotonic modal logics obtained by means of a variant of the well known Mc Dermott and Doyle xed point equation. The term ground logics carries the idea of restricting the negative in-trospection capabilities of the reasoning agent to the objective (i.e. non modal) part of the theory. This intuition was nicely...

General Approach to Nonmonotonic Logics

Nonmonotonic logics are logics in which theorems can be invalidated by new axioms. In this paper we propose a general framework in which a large class of non monotonic logics can be specified. 0. Introduction Traditional logics are monotonic-i.e., theorems of any theory belong to the set of theorems of any extension of the theory. In human reasoning the situa tion is different: one's knowledg...

An Approach to Minimal Belief via Objective Belief

As a doxastic counterpart to epistemic logic based on S5 we study the modal logic KSD that can be viewed as an approach to modelling a kind of objective and fair belief. We apply KSD to the problem of minimal belief and develop an alternative approach to nonmonotonic modal logic using a weaker concept of expansion. This corresponds to a certain minimal kind ofKSDmodel and yields a new type of n...
